For Artists: Promotional and commercial use, and digital files

Show the world the best images of you

If you are an artist we understand that you probably don't have a large marketing budget. But your chances of success are improved greatly by strong images. Isn't promoting your career worth the cost of a few hours of studio time ?

So if you are one of the choreographers, dancers, performers, or non-profit arts organizations involved with this non-profit event, and you would like to use an image for PROMOTION of you, your dance company, or some other small non-profit arts entity, whether in print (posters, postcards), reviews in newspapers, magazines or on the web, your website, etc, we have several special offers for you:

If you are NOT in one of these budget-challenged categorizes, or if you are but you have a COMMERCIAL USE, then our usual pricing would apply instead, and rights must be negotiated with us for that purpose.

In addition, note that the special licensing terms below are available only to the people or performance group visible in the images. Other people or organizations will not generally be granted license to use these images for promotion without the permission of the artists. Please contact us if you have such a use in mind.

For FREE to you Transmit to Publication We will transmit optimized image files to editorial publications that are mentioning your work (eg newspaper calendar sections or magazines). Just get us in touch with the publication. This gives us the opportunity to provide a file optimized for the publication's print technology (which varies tremendously from newsprint to magazine to web-only display), to make sure you look your best. There may be a usage fee the publication pays to us.

In return, all we require is that any image publically displayed, whether published, printed or displayed on the web or in email must have a PHOTO CREDIT to Keith WENG (please note spelling) along side the photo where it appears. You are responsible for making this request to whoever is doing the publishing.

For just $16 Optimized digital image file You can buy the right to reproduce an image for PROMOTIONAL USE (not commercial, see below). This price include a high-resolution digital image file, which you can use as much as you like for promotion in print or on the web, and for as long as you like, with no end date. These files are carefully optimized one-by-one to make you look your best, including color correction, sharpening, noise reduction, exposure correction and other dance-specific enhancements. They are ideal for printing full-page or larger flyers and posters, prints 8x10 and larger, as well as for submitting to publications, or giving your graphic designer and web designer the best possible materials to work with.
Compared to the rest of the media and advertising world, where the starting price would be much higher, and would only buy you the right to publish it once, that's an amazing deal !
Volume discounts are available.
Some choreographers and artists are interested in licensing their entire shoot, which may be hundreds of images. See the Proof File Set item below.
For just $8 Web image file You can order a digital image file ideal for web or other on-screen use (eg in a video), delivered as a low-resolution "jpeg" digital image file.
Note that this will not be useful for printing at any size.
Volume discounts are available.
Any image displayed on the web for any purpose, or emailed for promotional purpose must have a PHOTO CREDIT to Keith WENG (please note spelling) along side the photo where it appears.
Starting at $100 to cover an event Proof File Set You can order a Proof File Set of your entire shoot (all the images of your piece). This provides a complete set of medium-resolution digital image "jpeg" files. These are appropriate for web use or for printing up to about 4x6 size, but NOT APPROPRIATE for submission to publications or for printing full-page sized flyers or posters. A proof file set is ideal for documenting your work (you can make your own small prints) and for promotional uses such as postcards, photocopied flyers with quarter-page images, and for your website.

Proof quality means that images have not been individually optimized the way we do for standard orders (dance-specific enhancements like face and skin touchups, exposure, color correction, sharpening, noise reduction, and more). Sorry, you cannot select a subset of the shoot, as we batch process the entire shoot to provide this lower cost service. This service is available at events with multiple performance groups where we have covered the entire event; each group may choose independently to purchase this service; for events with a single performance group we would typically negotiate the fee up front.

Pricing Structure
Onsite shoot fee up to 4 hours$90Pays for me to arrange logistics with facilities manager; transport, setup and break down equipment onsite; conduct the shoot; setup online delivery for one choreographer or troupe.
Shooting a dress rehearsal one day and a performance another day requires this fee on each day.
Per additional choreographer/troupe fee$20Pays for separation of proofing, security, final delivery to separate choreographers and/or troupes
Per minute of total concert length (not counting intermission)$3 per minuteNumber of images depends primarily on length of piece, so this determines the amount of time require to process the images after the shoot
Per minute of total concert length shot during a repeat session$2 per minuteShooting a piece a 2nd time tends to give much better results, and costs you less per minute, so it is highly recommended
NOTE: these prices apply to shoots arranged before the performance. Orders made after the performance is shot will start at a flat $250 for one piece, and $20 for every additional, unless there is something unusual about the shooting or processing time involved which lowers or raises the production cost significantly.

Some examples
One piece 10 minutes long$90 + 10x$3$140
Three pieces by same choreographer or dance troupe, total length 28 minutes$90 + 28x$3.00$174
Three troupes, each by different choreographer, total duration of concert 70 minutes$90 + 2x$20 + 70x$3$340
Nine troupes, each by different choreographers, total duration of concert 130 minutes$90 + 8x$20 + 130x$3$640
Four troupes, but only three different choreographers receiving the images, total duration of concert 65 minutes, shot on two different nights2x$90 + 2x$20 + 65x$3 + 65x$2$545

If you are willing to have a copyright statement appear on each image, similar to this, a 10% discount will be made. With or without this, you are responsible for ensuring that a photo credit to Keith WENG appears alongside any image you put into print or on the web.

We require that you contact us to obtain optimized files before submitting to publications, as the proof-quality images do not protect our reputation or yours. This will be free to you, as specified in the Transmit to Publication item above.

You will also be eligible for a 40% discount on the licensing cost for an optimized high-resolution file for your own promotional use, or a 25% discount on the standard print price, on any image in the proof file set.

Note that no prints are included. If you order a proof file set, we can provide 4x6 "proof" prints of the entire set at a 80% discount on our standard print prices. Sorry, you cannot choose a subset of images to print at this price, as we batch process them to provide this lower cost service. Only 4x6 size is available at this discount. These prints are not optimized the way our standard prints are.

We reserve the right to determine who qualifies for this special pricing.

Commercial use by us

The copyright for any image belongs automically to the photographer, according to US copyright law. However, the right to publish an image depends on the venue and purpose -- some venues require not only the copyright, but the permission of people visible in the image, or of owners of property visible in the image. We do pursue opportunities to resell images for editorial and commercial use, since that's the only way we can stay in business. "Editorial" typically means an image is used to illustrate an article in a magazine, newspaper or book, or on a website. "Commercial" typically means an image is used either to advertize something, or on the packaging for something.

We will always attempt to contact you to get your permission before approving editorial publication of an image with you prominently recognizable in it.

We also respect the intellectual property inherent in the choreography captured in picture of dance, so we will always work with the choreographer and/or dancer to make sure images are not used in ways which compromise the intellectual property.

In the case of commercial use your permission is generally required by law in any case, so you will hear from us if opportunities arise. In situations with significant earning potential (say, where our gross profits are greater than about $100), we will happily send 10% of our profits on an image to you, in return for your permission to publish the image.
